GoM New Offshore Field Development Engineering Approach Trend

The Gulf of Mexico was once a hot spot for offshore oil and gas industry activity, and Houston was once a hub for technology development and exchange in the offshore oil and gas industry. The implementation of offshore projects has promoted the development and breakthrough of offshore engineering technology, and the practice of project implementation, especially the EPSI project, represents the development trend of offshore platform design and construction. However, with the development and changes of the global environment, political and economic pattern, and institutions, the situation of the oil and gas industry has undergone obvious changes, showing signs of recession. Correspondingly, new trends have emerged in terms of platform design concepts and concept selection. This presentation would like to briefly discuss the phenomena that have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in recent years.

Gengshen Liu is the president of US consulting firm, General Marine Engineering & Technology. Dr. Liu has more than 40 year industrial experiences including 28 years in the offshore industry in designing various kind of platforms including fixed platform, floaters such as Semi, SPAR, FPSO and TLP, and specialized in hull & mooring. As an engineering department manager and VP in Engineering, Dr. Liu have been successfully building up and leading the engineering teams during working at Technip Engineering Inc., Aker Marine Contractor and Boa Marine Services. Dr. Liu has intensively involved in multi-disciplinary engineering tasks covering various kinds of platform design from concept development to detailed design, and the engineering supports for offshore installation projects including T&I for LNG terminal, floating platforms, SURF, jacket launching, topsides floatover installation, etc. As the member of working group of API RP 2SK and API RP 2SM, Dr. Liu was also active in new technology development in deepwater floater concepts, offshore installation methods and novel facility, and intensely involved in DeepStar and other offshore industry activities.
